Clay may seem useless now, probably because it is, you wont need a whole lot but 6 clay blocks can make one clay pot which will allow you to plant seeds in them. I could gather around 120 clay to make 20 pots to plant seeds in. The seeds you mainly want to before hard mode would be moonglow and deathweed. A post about why will come up sometime.
